文章摘要:
本文是关于澳大利亚文化融合的一篇文章。文章开始介绍论文澳大利亚成为英格兰的殖民地后两种文化开始碰撞。文章之后的几段分别从语言、文化和艺术等三个方面,谈论澳大利亚文化融合的情况。

In 1770, Captain James Cook, a navigator from England, arrived at the east coast of Australia and announced that this area belonged to England. From then on, Australia became the colony of England. Two different cultures started to exchange and infiltrate in the area of language, art and custom. Now The Commonwealth of Australia is an independent nation, but its culture is probably the most multivariate.

 在1770年,来自英格兰的航海家詹姆士.库克船长到达了澳大利亚东海岸,并宣布这块区域归英格兰所有。从那以后,澳大利亚成为了英格兰的殖民地。两种不同的文化在语言、艺术和习俗等方面开始交流和渗透。如今,澳大利亚共和国是一个独立的国家,但是它的文化可能是最具多元化的。

First of all, language should be the first to occur to people’s mind when talking about a country. Native Australians made some significant influence on Australians’ speaking English. Many English words in Australia are coming from the aboriginal language, such as corroboree (a dancing party), gibber which means “speak with a slip”, nulla-nulla (a wooden bar) and warrigal (a kind of Australian wild dog). When people in Australia greeting somebody, they usually say“G’day mate” rather than “ nice to see you”. Australians will say “cheers mate” when expressing thanks. Another frequently-used phrase is “no worries”. An apparent feature in Australian words is that people like using a “/i:/” pronunciation as the end of a word. To give an example, mozzie which stands for mosquito, and chokkie, which is for chocolate.

The aborigines did made a permanent influence on language, but the art of the natives cannot be neglected. The primitive paintings were always drawn on sand, people’s body and pots. These paintings cannot live a long time. Now native artists are able to create their outstanding works on the canvas. Artists use simple dots, curves, lines and geometrical figure with different colors to paint their hometown, the forest and wild animals. These art works are wild but extraordinarily appealing. They are very popular across the country even the entire world.

Furthermore, the custom is also one of the most essential aspects of Australia culture. Totems are a symbol of ancestors or patron saints, which means so much to the aborigines. Everybody has their own totems such as a fish, a little bird or a kangaroo. These totems can also be seen in the modern Australians’ homes. A peculiar funeral is preserved in some area of Australia. When a person dies, families get together to cut down some wooden stakes pained with totems symbolizing every one of the family. They put these stakes around the grave and hang the body till the next full moon. Mourner will not leave until the rain comes.

In summary, people in Australia are deeply influence by the natives even in the modern time. The influence almost covers all aspects of Australians’ everyday life, such as language, art and custom. However, with the modernization, a large quantity of primitive culture will never exist again. Government should attach importance to the issue. Measures should be taken to preserve the culture from being abandoned.
