Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Research Background

News English is a kind of functional genre discourse with strong generality. According tothe tenor, it can be sub-divided into news report, news features stories, Editorials and othersub-genres. Editorials are mainly used to explain and comment on important events or issuesboth at home and abroad with the aim to more importantly express their attitudes and stanceson hot issues and influence the public's judgment and viewpoints on these events rather thanmerely report the news fact (Ju Changzhen, 2007).News editorials are regarded as a newspaper’s heart and soul, thus they definitely play anoverwhelmingly important role in reporting news, serving the public and guiding the socialpublic opinions on the currently happened hot issues both at home and abroad(Sinclair, 1995).And more importantly, the editorials’ stances are not in the name of personal view but thenewspaper’s official position instead. Hence, as far as the public are concerned, they are moreauthoritative. On account of the critical role that the editorial plays in a newspaper, acomprehensive study of the editorial becomes an necessary task. Scholars have studied thenews editorial from different perspectives in various domains.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Thesis

Through a comparative analysis of the language used by Chinese and Americaneditorialists under the framework of Engagement, the author aims to probe into what kinds ofengagement resources, especially the heteroglossic resources have been harnessed in theChinese and American English news editorials so that their stances are laid out and the actualor potential readers get affected by their attitudes. In addition, the author also expects to findout what the frequency of engagement resources are like. And most importantly, the papertargets at investigating similarities and differences between Chinese and American Englishnews editorials in the number and frequency of each engagement resource. And also theauthor aims to find out what functions are realized by engagement resourcs as well as tofurther exploit the possible reasons which bring about such similarities and differences fromthe perspective of cultural backgrounds.With respect to the significance of the present study, three aspects are concluded asfollows: Firstly, the scope of Appraisal Theory’s application can be broadened through thisresearch. Despite the fact that a number of scholars have previously applied the AppraisalTheory to the analysis of media discourses, such as news comments, news report as well ashard news, and etc, the angle being emphasized is the sub system of Attitude rather than theEngagement system.

Chapter Two Literature Review


2.1 Studies of The Editorial

From the following various definitions offered by scholars from their own differentpoints of view, we can have a panoramic and comprehensive view on editorials.Spencer (1924), in the book Editorial Writing, gave editorials definition like this “apresentation of fact and opinion in concise, logical, pleasing order for the sake of entertaining,of influencing opinion, or of interpreting significant news in such a way that its importance tothe average reader will be clear”(Spencer 1924: 16). Besides, in the Editorial, an editorialwriting textbook written by Flint, editorial was defined as “the published expression of theopinions of an editor and it is one of the many mediums through which men have satisfiedtheir instinct to spread ideas, storm centers of thought, and furnish its natural habitat”(Flint1926: 1). While from Stonecipher’s (1990) point of view, an editorial may be taken as ajournalistic paper which either tries to persuade or convince, to inform or explain; or throughwhich an insight can be stimulated in a humorous or entertaining manners. Meanwhile, in theCOBUILD, a Chinese Dictionary, an editorial is depicted as an article in a newspaper throughwhich the view of the publisher or the editor on a topic or piece of news can be expressed(Sinclair 1982). In addition, according to the Webster’s New World Dictionary (Neufeldt1994), editorial usually placed in a special and an important position is portrayed as aperiodical or newspaper article and through which the ideas or opinions of those in control ofthe publication about a matter of present interests can be purposely indicated.

2.2 Studies of Engagement

In this section, an introductory explanation of Appraisal Theory and Engagement will befirstly outlined and then some previous related studies on Engagement both in China andoverseas will be presented. According to Martin and Rose(2001), Appraisal Theory, a newly developed theoryregarding interpersonal meaning is originally derived from the Systemic FunctionalLinguistics (SFL) which identifies three modes of meaning operating simultaneously in allutterances, namely, the ideational meaning fulfilled by transitivity system, interpersonalmeaning fulfilled by mood system as well as textual meaning fulfilled by thematic system andthereby the social relationships can be negotiated through the three meta-functions oflanguage (Martin & Rose, 2003). Within SFL the systemic functional grammar is taken as itsbasis and yet the discourse analysis is concentrated and hence it pertains to an explanatorystudy (Wang Zhenghua, 2001). More importantly, the interpersonal function within SFL ismainly realized through the mood system. And among the mood, the rapport of socialrelationship is mainly negotiated by the employment of mood, modality, modal adjuncts andetc. However, the study on semantics of evaluation appears not to be touched upon in thisapproach to interpersonal meaning. That is, the study of the interlocutors’ attitudes,viewpoints, and stances towards the events has not been much concerned by the systemicfunctional grammar. By contrast, the Appraisal Theory, as an interpersonal system, attends tothe research of semantics of evaluation and hence it belongs to be interpretative (Martin &White, 2008). Accordingly, this bind spot was found out by James R. Martin and thus theAppraisal Theory was established in the early nineties of the 20th century.

Chapter Four Results and Discussion


By quantitative together with qualitative approaches, this chapter will put emphasis onthe results and discussion in both editorials after the annotation of texts. Firstly, with respectto the quantitative analysis, Table 2a-c to Table 5a-c will be worked out to provide thedescriptive statistics of Engagement resources in both corpora, specifically, the numbers andfrequencies of each Engagement recourse will be shown in the form of global and localcounting respectively. And then, with Table 6a-c and Table 7a-c, through the global and localcounting, the similarities and disparities of Engagement resources in both target texts areillustrated by executing the study of “compare two datasets”. As regards to the qualitativeanalysis, some typical and specific examples will be given to show the realizations ofEngagement resources in both editorials. Furthermore, the final section of this chapter willdeal with a discussion on the similarities and differences between the two corpora and thenthe author attempts to offer some reasonable causes that contribute to such similarities anddifferences.

Conclusion


This dissertation conducts a comparative study on the editorials of Chinese andAmerican English from the perspective of Engagement within the Appraisal Theory. With thehelp of Corpus Tool 2.8.12, it is clear that a number of Engagement Resources exist in bothChinese and American English editorials and thus these resources serve to offer means bywhich the arguability of editorialists’ proposals as well as propositions are adjusted andnegotiated by the editorialists. And also, some similarities and differences between the twotarget texts are found through the present study. Then after a discussion, the similarities aremainly caused by the common purposes of editorials as well as the nature of the engagementsystem itself. And also it’s the disparities in cultural value as well as the attitudes towards theinternational affairs that bring about the differences.Based on a thorough and detailed study of the 70 English editorials, the authorsummaries the following major findings which also serve as the corresponding answers to thequestions raised before. According to the statistical data, a good number of EngagementResources are employed in both corpora. 2. The similarities between editorials of Chinese andAmerican English lie in the following aspects: a. Within Contract type, both kinds of targettexts are prone to use more Disclaim values than Proclaim values; b. In Disclaim sub-type,both Chinese English and American English corpora prefer Counter values to Deny values; c.In Proclaim sub-type, the Pronounce resource is the most favorably applied value in bothcorpora; d. Within Expand type, the entertain resources are more employed over attribute ones;e.
