Chapter 1 Introduction


1.1 The Background of the Study

English is an important fundamental curriculum from primary school to highschool. Teaching material is knowledge carrier of teaching content and teachingmethods for a school. It is the blueprint of learning the cultivation of English ability forlearners, and it is the most important base of the school teaching organization forteachers. A textbook is the most important curriculum resource in English teaching,which has great effect on English learning. Research on English textbooks makes greatprogress, which has important significance and enlightenment in English teaching. Allthe schools in China follow a national curriculum for a long time: the syllabus,theteaching plan and the textbook. For keeping up with the times,the reform of newcurriculum in China is carried out vigorously. In recent years, research on teachingmaterials showed unprecedented prosperity and active situation. The different presseshave published a wonderful series of textbooks to implement the policy. According tothe English Curriculum Standards for Chinese High School Students (2003 edition), anew kind of English curricular pattern should include the compulsory course andselective course. Learning compulsory course can cultivate the students' interests instudying English; help them build up self-confidence; let them possess the ability andskills to exercise the language and in the meantime the students can acquire the culturalcommunicative competence. Learning selective course can meet the needs of students'development and self-realization. The aim about teaching materials is to establish a newsystem for English textbooks and enrich course resources.

1.2 The Significance of the Study

Teaching materials are the core of the course which determines the content andthe form of teaching. English is the main course in basic education. Teaching materialsplay an important part in English teaching. Most students look forward to absorbing theknowledge from teaching materials. They spend most time on reading and learningteaching materials. They also can leam the learning strategies from teaching materials.In the meantime, teaching materials are guides for teachers to prepare their teachingplan and methods. In other words,teaching materials are evidence that the students andteachers should abide by, which represents the two fundamental sides of teachingEnglish: what to teach and how to teach. Therefore, it is of vital importance that a goodteaching material should be suitable for the development of students and teachers.Advanced and appropriate teaching materials can help teachers to improve the teaching level. Evaluating teaching materials is an inevitable trend of development. However, toassess teaching materials is a complicated process because of the different users andcircumstances. Therefore it is an important task to make a reasonable evaluation ofteaching materials according to the changing teaching situation, which can help teachersto make good use of the teaching materials. It is necessary to assess NSE textbooks inapplication.

Chapter 2 Literature Review


2.1 Previous Studies on Using Teaching Materials at Home and Abroad

GHall and S.M.Hord(2004) build a model about the curriculum implementation,which can be called the Concerns-Based Adoption Model (CBAM). CBAM which is aconceptual framework provides tools and techniques to assess and facilitate reform in aneducational environment. CBAM was a multi-dimensional construct comprised of threediagnostic dimensions: Stages of Concern, Levels of Use, and InnovationConfigurations. Most researchers use these tools as the basis in measuring theimplementation of the curriculum. Innovation Configurations (IC) is a tool thatidentifies and describes the diverse forms of an innovation adopted by different teachers.It describes an innovation or change in action. Teachers almost always alter Innovationsto fit the conditions and satisfy the needs of their students and classrooms. One part ofIC map is about teaching materials usage. An Innovation Configuration (IC) Map iscreated to clarify what kind of innovation or change actually looks like, fromhigh-quality implementation to least desirable in using teaching materials. The levelstatistical model of using textbooks is composed of four stages and seven dimensions.We can transform the actions or innovations into the corresponding class from highestto lowest and assign as -2,-1,0, 1,and 2. The numbers represent misuse, rigid use,routine use without novelty, routine use with novelty and creative use.

2.2 Domestic and Foreign Teaching Materials Evaluation Theory

Teaching materials have broad sense and narrow sense,English teachingmaterials with no exception. English teaching materials refer to the whole things relatedto learning and teaching in broad sense which are rich in connotation (Liu&Wu, 2011).All the materials which help students to obtain and enrich knowledge and develop theirskills in teaching activity to reach the teaching goal can be called teaching materials. Itnot only includes paper textbooks, but also the references, teaching instruments andtools, such as teachers' books, students' books, workbook, supplementary exercises,supplemental readings, tutoring materials, newspapers and magazines; tape recording,video, slides, pictures and cards, multimedia, courseware, real model, discussion andexplanation in teaching. While in narrow sense, it only refers to the textbooks used inEnglish teaching process (Liu&Wu, 2011). A textbook is the main basis of studentslearning and teachers teaching. It is the communication-medium between teachers andstudents. Textbooks are the most important part in teaching materials. Textbooks of highquality play an important role in understanding and mastering the content accurately.

Chapter 4 Results Analysis and Discussion


4.1 Data Analysis

This part presents the results of the students' and teachers' questionnaires. Theresearcher analyzes the statistical data to assess the application and the effectiveness ofNSE textbooks. teachers in Zhongcun Middle School are pleased with NSE textbooks in general. As forthe difficulty level of NSE textbooks, 71.4% of the teachers consider the NSE textbooksare a little more difficult and 19% of the teachers think they are too difficult. Thecomments in relation to the familiarity of the organization and contents in the textbookreveal that 13 teachers (61.9%) are basically know. 28.6%of the teachers are completelyfamiliar with the structure and the contents. As for the understanding of the purpose ofeach part activities in NSE textbooks, nearly half of the teachers believe that theybasically understand.38.1 %of the teachers completely understand the purpose whileonly two teachers less understand.

Conclusion


This research is concerned with the application of NSE textbooks in rural areassouthern part of Shaanxi Province. It adopts questionnaires, interviews and classroomobservations to investigate and analyze the situation of applying the NSE textbooks, anddraw the following conclusions. NSE textbooks have advantages and disadvantages in the process of applying.Most teachers and students who are investigated in Zhongcun Middle School arebasically satisfied with NSE textbooks in general. The knowledge of NSE textbooks hasreached the requirements of the English New Curriculum Standard, The distribution ofgrammar seems quite scattered. However,the way of presenting the grammar issystematic. NSE textbooks adopt Heuristic method to help students internalize thegrammar rules better. NSE textbooks present the vocabulary in context and combine thevocabulary learning with the listening,speaking,reading and writing skills training.And it designs different activities to help students leam the vocabulary, such asmatching and fill the blanks. NSE textbooks take the topics as the main line in eachmodule and throughout the modules.
